Oferiks: /* GH Internal Message Type 1 */

NMEA Message Formats
The NMEA message formats are specified in /IEC 61162-1/ these are encoded/decoded using the AIS codec.

NMEA messages originate from transponders (information from ships) or from users (sending AtoN e.g.).

Internal Message Formats
Internal message formats are modelled after the NMEA message formats (see /IEC 61162-1/). Internal messages originate from within the AIS system, basically all other messages than those received by ships or users are encapsulated in the internal message formats.

Two different internal formats are specified in the following, as well as the date format used for the internal messages.

Date format
The date format will be in UTC time and are specified as follows:

Date format=<year>,<month>,<day>,<hour>,<minut>,<second>,<millisecond>

Example=2004,12,31,23,59,59,999

GH Internal Message Type 1
Note: This information has not been confirmed, but is believed to be correct

GH internal message type 1 are used for “encapsulating” NMEA messages. The “encapsulation” basically takes places by sending a GH specific message before sending the NMEA message. This has the advantage that GIS systems still should be able to handle the message stream since the unknown GH message would be ignored and the NMEA message interpreted is usual.

The internal message type 1 are specified as follows:

$PGHP,<msgtype>,<date format>,<country>,<region>,<pss>,<online data>,<cc>*hh<CR><LF>

<NMEA message>

* <msgtype> is 1 for this message type (Gatehouse internal message type 1)
* <date format> as specified above
* <country> is the MMSI country code where the message originates from.
* <region> the MMSI number of the region
* <pss> the MMSI number of the site transponder
* <online data> buffered data from a BSC will be designated with 0. Online data with 1.
* <cc> the checksum value of the following NMEA sentence
* <*hh> checksum as described in /IEC 61162-1/
* <NMEA message> is the NMEA message that follows immediately after the $PGHP sentence

Example:

$PGHP,1,2008,5,9,0,0,0,10,338,2,,1,09*17

!AIVDM,1,1,,B,15NBj>PP1gG>1PVKTDTUJOv00<0M,0*09
Frequency of Ship Collisions in the Strait of Messina through Regulatory and Environmental Constraints Assessment
F. Cucinotta · E. Guglielmino · F. Sfravara

ABSTRACT:
The Strait of Messina is a very busy sea area that separates Sicily and the Italian mainland. In respect of environment and for the prevention of human loss, it is fundamental to have an estimate of the possible ship accidents that could occur. In this work, the approach used is the International Association of Lighthouse Authorities Waterways Risk Assessment Program (IWRAP) model.
The first part of the paper describes the local and global traffic and the separation scheme in the Strait of Messina. The model input data is obtained from the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) system thanks to the Coast Guard of Messina.
The second part concerns calculation of the geometrical collisions (number of collisions in different scenarios) and the causation probability. This analysis is the basis for the discussion of new regulatory constraints due to the future realisation of new piers in the south and the planned unification of the two Port Authorities of the two shores into one single authority.
Collision Risk Analysis of Chittagong Port in Bangladesh by Using Collision Frequency Calculation Models with Modified BBN Model
Mohammad Ehsan Khaled · Yasumi Kawamura

ABSTRACT:
An updated accident database with 789 overall waterway accidents from 1981-2013 at Chittagong Port (CP) in Bangladesh shows around 48% accidents were collision. In this paper, collision risk in CP is analyzed by constructing collision frequency calculation models that are solved using IWRAP Mk2, software for maritime risk assessment modelling.
Causation Probability is evaluated by a localized Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) model on HUGIN Researcher software and used as a direct input of IWRAP Mk2. Suggestion about modification of BBN model's output is given based on sensitivity analysis followed by an assessment of influence of a newly installed Risk Control Option (RCO) i.e., Vessel Traffic and Management Information System (VTMIS) on probability of collision.
The validity of the developed model is shown by comparing between predicted collision probability and historical data. Close proximity between the database data and obtained value has been found regarding collision frequency, vessel types in collision accident, accident prone zones etc. that can be used as a reference for future decision making on safety standard upgrade of CP.
Such analysis can be carried out on different ports and channels worldwide to calculate collision risk and ensure safety.
Developing a Program to Pre-process AIS Data and applying to Vung Tau Waterway in Vietnam - Based on the IWRAP Mk2 program -
Xuan Thanh Nguyen · Young-Soo Park · Jin-Soo Park · Jae-Yong Jeong

ABSTRACT:
The IWRAP program (Inland Waterway Risk Assessment Program) is a useful program for risk assessment of a waterway. However, in the basic version, the function which is used to import AIS data is not included. So users have to prepare the data and input to the program manually. And not all waterways have enough statistical data about passing vessels especially in developing countries as Vietnam. This paper studies the development of a program to pre-process AIS data for using the IWRAP Mk2 program basic version.
In addition, it provides users basic information about marine traffic in a waterway such as routes layout, number of passages at a gate classified by type, size and time.
The developed program, named TOAIS (Total AIS), was successfully used to pre-process AIS data collected in the Vung Tau waterway-Vietnam. As a result, the IWRAP Mk2 program basic version using data pre-processed from TOAIS could effectively assess the risk of collision in this waterway.
A Study on the Marine Traffic Assessment based on Traffic Distribution in the Strait of Malacca
Nguyen Xuan Thanh · Young-Soo Park · Jin-Soo Park · Tae-Goun Kim

ABSTRACT:
The Strait of Malacca is one of the most important fairways in the world and its traffic safety has direct effect on economic development of East Asian countries including China, Japan and Korea. Because of this reason, a safety analysis of the marine traffic in the strait has a great significance.
In this paper, we analysed the statistic distribution of marine traffic in the Strait of Malacca based on the vessels' AIS data for 1 month by using the TOAIS and EasyFit programs.
As the results of the analysis, it was found that the traffic distribution of this strait was different with normal distribution, which had been still widely used in marine traffic engineering field.
Furthermore, with the traffic distribution analysis results, the traffic safety of the strait was also assessed by using the IWRAP model.
The results showed that the highest level of risk were overtaking and crossing situations. Finally, we found that the highest risk of collision area in the Strait of Malacca was crossing area between the Strait of Malacca and the Port Klang fairway.
A Quantitative Marine Traffic Safety Assessment of the Vung Tau Waterway
Xuan Thanh Nguyen · Youngsoo Park · Jinsoo Park

ABSTRACT:
Marine traffic safety of the Vung Tau Waterway, from port limit to Ganh Rai Gulf, plays a crucial role in the economic development of the important triangular economic zone in the south of Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai Province, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.
This paper uses the IWRAP Mk2 program to assess marine traffic safety and shows that in the area there are three parts of fairway have highest risk of collision (from buoys No. 8-9 to buoys No. 1-2 of the Song Dinh fairway; from buoy No. 0 to buoys No. 8-9 and from buoys No. 6-9 to buoys No. 8-9A of the Sai Gon-Vung Tau fairway) and the two areas have highest risk of grounding (the Vung Tau coastline from Ganh Hao to Sao Mai and an area in the Ganh Rai Gulf).
In addition, the result of a questionnaire survey on a group of Pilots shows that wind, current and rain/fog have considerable negative effect to ship handling of large vessels in this area.
This paper's results will be used in the further research to discover solutions for improving marine traffic safety in the Vung Tau Waterway.
Article: Comparison Analysis between the IWRAP and the ES Model in Ulsan Waterway
Dae-Won Kim · Jin-Soo Park · Young-Soo Park

ABSTRACT:
According to the Marine Traffic Safety Law, revised in 2009, Marine Traffic Safety Audit is introduced to secure the safe navigation, to prevent the marine accident and to maximize the efficiency of the port.
In this audit system, marine traffic safety assessment is the most important scheme because the primary purpose of the audit system is to identify potential risk elements affecting safe navigation.
Even though the reliability of audit result depends on the selection of assessment models, there are no independent assessment models for Korean coastal waters and most of models used in Korea currently are developed by foreign countries.
Therefore, the development of the independent assessment model for Korean coastal water is required.
This study, prior to the development of independent assessment model, aims to provide a basic data by comparing two foreign assessment models in Ulsan port area with marine accident statistics data.
Application of Dempster–Shafer theory for the quantification and propagation of the uncertainty caused by the use of AIS data
Alejandro Talavera · Ricardo Aguasca · Blas Galván · Andrés Cacereño

ABSTRACT:
This paper proposes a novel method to quantify the uncertainty inherent to the paths that ships will navigate in the future, from the information provided by the AIS system on the paths followed by the ships in the past. In the framework of the Dempster–Shafer theory, the proposed method analyzes the information contained in a known distribution of vessel traffic on a waterway to construct the corresponding Dempster–Shafer structure.
From this structure, using the confidence limits of Kolmogorov–Smirnov, it is possible to estimate the evidential measures (belief and plausibility) of all possible distributions of traffic on that waterway.
The interesting facts of this proposal are that these evidential measures are, according to the probabilistic interpretation proposed by Dempster [1], the lower and upper bounds of an interval that contains future distributions of maritime traffic on the waterway under consideration.
Therefore, it can be concluded that knowledge of the traffic on a waterway in a given period allows delimit, with a certain confidence level, the uncertainty associated with the randomness of the trajectories that follow the ships during periods of equal duration.
The results obtained by the proposed method for the studied case of the Canary Islands are presented, showing reasonable agreement with the results obtained by the software IWRAP Mk2.
A Basic Study on Assessment Criterion of the Risk Factor for the Marine Traffic Environment
Chol-Seong Kim · Hong-Hoon Lee

ABSTRACT:
The representative risk evaluation techniques of the marine traffic environment are the FSA, PAWSA, & IWRAP. For the development of these techniques, the risk factors suitable to the marine traffic environment should be selected & the assessment criterion of the risk factors should be provided.
The risk factors were selected as the factors that relate both to the frequency of casualty & to the consequence of casualty because the risk was defined as the frequency of casualty times the consequence of that casualty on the existing techniques.
But, the risk factors relate to the consequence of casualty are excluded because the risk is defined as the sum of the risk factors including the frequency and the consequence by factors on this study.
The 20 kinds of risk factors to compose the risk are selected and classified into 5 categories according to similar nature through the analysis of preceding study on the classification of the risk factors.
Finally, as the foundation of risk assessment model`s development for domestic marine traffic environment, the practical assessment criterion of the risk factors are suggested
Article: Analysis of marine accident probability in Mokpo waterways
Kwang-Il Kim · Gye-Kark Park · Jung-Sik Jeong

ABSTRACT:
The maritime risk assessment is important not only to evaluate the safety level of the ports and waterways but also to reduce potential maritime accidents at sea in terms of the proactive measures of the maritime accidents.
In this paper, the collision risk assessment in Mokpo waterways has been carried out based on the IALA recommended model, IWRAP. To evaluate the accident probabilities in Mokpo waterways, all data of vessels were collected from AIS and Radar observations data and the computer simulations were carried out.
To assess the risk on the traffic, the scenario-base approach has been applied to the Mokpo waterway by using the maritime accident statics over the past 5 years.

<big>FAQ on the commercial version

</big> (answers provided by Gatehouse)

What is the difference between the free and the commercial version of IWRAP?
The primary difference between the commercial version and the basic version of IWRAP Mk2 is, that the commercial version automatically extracts information from AIS data. In the basic version, which is made available free of charge to IALA members, the analyst would have to do this manually, which is time consuming and somewhat cumbersome.

Are there any issues with running the application behind corporate firewalls?
No, IWRAP uses simple HTTP request to download maps, should not be a problem unless the firewall is extremely restrictive.

Licence is per user or per organisation?
Currently per user. A license is locked to one user, a user may install on several computers e.g. office desktop and additional laptop. If you need several licenses I am of course flexible with regards to pricing.

How many users can be allowed on one user licence?
See the answer above.

What is the current cost per annum?
3500 Euro the first year and 2800 the following years for IALA members.

6000 Euro the first year and 4500 the following years for non-IALA members.

What environments can it work on (e.g. Windows 7, other?)
Windows 7 or later.

What sort of support can our IT team expect?
Normally we have day to day problem solving, e.g. in case encounter a bug. Currently we don’t have any known bugs and it is very rare that people have problems using IWRAP, even people who have received no training. The critical phase is usually the AIS data import , as there are no standards, IWRAP has become very flexible when it comes to handling different formats and I will of course assist you to make sure you get through this phase correctly.

Best installed on PC or on the corporate network?
Currently only PC.

Impact on PC performance if installed a) on PC and b) if installed on network
Depends on what you want to do ;-), I have heard of people having IWRAP loading tons of data over night or performing analysis over night, but that should rarely be needed. On a normal multi core computer it is no problem to have IWRAP running and processing in the background.

Installation and configuration
Where do I download IWRAP?
You can download the latest version of IWRAP from the Installation page on this site.

If you experience problems, please feel free to contact Omar Frits Eriksson, ofe_at_frv_dot_dk.

How do I install IWRAP?
Installing IWRAP takes between 10 and 30 minutes, and involves doownlading/copying files, and running the installer script to configure the software - see Installation.

Licensing scheme
Why do I need a license?
No License no play. The IWRAP software is free off charge for IALA members, however in order to keep track of who is actually using the software, IALA has chosen a licencing scheme that ensures that the sofware expires after a certain period of time. This also helps ensuring that everyone has an updated version of IWRAP.

Who can obtain a license?
Only IALA members can obtain the free IWRAP license.

Everyone can buy a license to a commercial variant of IWRAP.

Universities can apply for a time limited license from the IALA secretariat.

How do I get an IWRAP License
When you run the IWRAP program for the first time, the software asks for your contact details and then provides you with the first part of the license key. You are then asked to send this key to IALA (through e-mail). After checking your IALA membership, IALA returns the complete license key which you paste into the software, and you are ready to run the programme.

How long does the license last?
When the license key is issued, the expiration time is defined. This will be a few months in the beginning, but will probably be set to one year once the software is fairly mature.

How many licenses can my organization obtain?
As many as you need.

IALA just wants to keep track of the users of IWRAP.

If I already have a license and I download a new version of IWRAP, will I need a new license?
NO the old license will be valid for the new version of IWRAP until the license expires.

IWRAP Models
How do I start a new modelling project?
See the User Manual

Why do I get the question "Do you want to upload model to IALA?
IALA wants to collect waterway models from all over the world. The ultimate aim is to put together a global risk model :-).

Why should we share our models?
IALA wants to collect waterway models from all over the world. The ultimate aim is to put together a global risk model :-)

Causation Factors
Probabilities or Causation Factors
Are the numbers listed in Causation Probabilities from Literature estimated probabilities of groundings, collisions, ship-bridge collisions or are they causation factors (difference between geometric and actual observed probabilities)?

Answer:

The numbers listed in the tables are causation factors, i.e. their usage should in principle be as follows:

Number of Incidents pr. year = (Number of candidates pr. year) X (Causation Factor)

Where (Number of candidates pr year) is the outcome of the geometry maths.

AIS data
How much should I downsample AIS data
Downsamling of AIS data may be necessary to reduce the volume of data to be exchanged between two parties.

See Downsamling of AIS data

How do I import raw AIS data into IWRAP
See Importing raw AIS data

Replay and making Movies with IWRAP
Movies - What do the ellipses represent?
The ellipses are based on the ship domain work of Fujii (Japan) and others. They are a kind of safety ellipses.

Movies - What does the colour of the ellipses represent?
The colors are just different ship types. You can change the colors in the replay setup within IWRAP.

Other Questions
Can we use ENC's with IWRAP MK II?
No. IWRAP does not yet support proper ENC's.

However Version 2.0 onwards of IWRAP supports Raster Charts as well as Web Map Services (WMS) such as Google Maps and Open Street maps. Google and Open Street give you only the coastline, not the bathymetry of the waterway so, at present, the only way to display Navigational Charts as background, is to use Raster Charts.

How is AIS data used in IWRAP?
Are we just using the AIS data to determine leg distribution and volume? Or are we actually uploading the AIS data tracks into IWRAP MK II?

The Basic (free) version of IWRAP does not support automatic import of AIS data. In the Malacca Strait exercise we used external tools for Processing AIS Data to determine volume of traffic, route layout and lateral distribution of traffic on each route leg.

The Danish Maritime Safety Administration (DAMSA) has developed a set of tools external to IWRAP, that are capable of Processing AIS Data to obtain the above mentioned information and to compile it into an IWRAP waterway model file (XML).

The commercial version of IWRAP (released August 2010) includes more or less automatic processing of AIS data.

Operating Systems?
IWRAP has been tested to run without problems on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

It has also been tested on a Chinese version of Microsoft Windows XP (Tested at Shanghai University).

It has been verified that IWRAP does not (yet) run on MAC.
