IALA STRATEGIC VISION
PURPOSE
The aim of IALA is to foster the safe, economic and efficient movement of vessels, through improvement and harmonisation of aids to navigation worldwide and other appropriate means, for the benefit of the maritime community and the protection of the environment.
MOTTO
“Successful voyages, sustainable planet.”
STRATEGIC DOMAIN
A Marine Aid to Navigation is a device, system, or service — external to a vessel — designed and operated to enhance the safe and efficient navigation of individual vessels and/or vessel traffic. Within this domain, IALA operates as a consultative, recommendatory, and technical organization, working through the harmonisation of standards, technical guidance, and capacity building for the benefit of the maritime community and the protection of the environment.
Strategic Vision
The aim of IALA is to foster the safe, economic and efficient movement of vessels, through the improvement and harmonisation of aids to navigation worldwide and other appropriate means, for the benefit of the maritime community and the protection of the environment.
Current Drivers and Trends
The Strategic Vision sets out the enduring purpose of IALA. The maritime environment in which that purpose is pursued, however, continues to change rapidly. Current Drivers and Trends identify the global forces shaping the maritime sector — and the work of IALA — over the foreseeable future, and are continuously reviewed and adopted by the Council.
Support the UN Sustainable Development Goals
IALA recommends that National members and other Marine Aids to Navigation authorities responsible for the provision of Marine Aids to Navigation endeavour to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and implement formal systems to protect the marine environment and promote sustainability to minimise their impact on the world’s resources.
