IALA Workshop on Sustainability in Aids to Navigation Provision
6–10 October 2025 | Dublin, Ireland https://www.iala.int/product/workshop-on-sustainability-in-aton-provision/
The International Organisation for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA), in collaboration with Irish Lights, will host the Workshop on Sustainability in Aids to Navigation (AtoN) Provision from 6 to 10 October 2025 in Dublin, Ireland. This significant event aims to explore sustainable best practices within the AtoN sector, equipping maritime authorities with practical guidance to balance environmental responsibility with operational efficiency.
Background
IALA has long championed the sustainable provision of AtoN, recognising that:
- AtoN plays a vital role in preventing maritime disasters that could have catastrophic environmental consequences.
- AtoN infrastructure and activities must minimise their own environmental impact, such as waste generation, energy use, and habitat disturbance.
- Sustainable practices are essential for the entire AtoN industry to help nations achieve environmental targets.
- The economic viability of sustainable AtoN provision must be considered alongside budget constraints.
- Future demands, including the rise of autonomous vessels, will require new skillsets within the industry.
To support its members, IALA is committed to providing clear guidance on how to fulfil statutory obligations while minimising environmental impact and maximising societal benefits.
Workshop Topics
Discussions will focus on key sustainability issues, including:
- International regulatory frameworks, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
- The lifecycle environmental impact of AtoN components.
- Integrating sustainability into decision-making.
- The economic case for sustainability.
- Ensuring the right skillsets for future AtoN operations.
- The role of IT solutions in sustainable AtoN provision.
The workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to:
- Gain insights from leading experts.
- Contribute to the development of a draft IALA sustainability position paper.
- Identify key actions and recommendations for administrations and IALA.
- Attend a parallel event: the Lighthouse Tourism and Maritime Heritage Conference at Dublin Castle.
Workshop Structure
The five-day workshop will feature:
- Expert presentations from across the maritime sector.
- Breakout working groups to discuss areas where further IALA guidance is needed.
- Development of a draft sustainability framework to inform future IALA standards and best practices.
